The Ru Yi has long been a popular Chinese talisman that served as a ceremonial scepter in Imperial China, symbolizing power, authority, and good fortune, and its image appears frequently in Chinese art. Its shape resembles that of a lingzhi, and over the ages, Ru Yi has been fashioned in materials of all kinds from precious metals such as gold and silver, to ivory, lacquer, and jade. 

During the Zhou Dynasty, the Ru Yi represented light, regenerative power, and fertility. In the Qing Dynasty, it became a symbol of political power. And in the modern day, Chinese businessmen and tycoons often display a Ruyi in the office to signify power, command, and business success. 

Phonetically, the word “Ru Yi” in Chinese sounds like “According to one’s wishes” or “As you wish”. The Ruyi is thus a wish-fulfilling scepter. While it is better known as a symbol of power, its wider and original meaning was of achieving all of one’s desires.
